The Architect

Almost 2 months ago, singer Kacey Musgraves released a new album called Deeper Well. In one of the songs on this album called “The Architect,” Kacey offers some honest questions as she wonders aloud if there is a creator. She acknowledges the complexity of something even as small as an apple and asks, “Can I speak to the architect?” Kacey notes the various things in the world that seem to point to a creator and asks at the song’s conclusion, “Is there an architect?”

If we look to scripture for the answer to this question, it is answered with a resounding yes! The Bible acknowledges Kacey’s observations in Romans 1:20 when it says, “For [God’s] invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made.” Creation – apples, canyons, and even you and I as human beings – points to the existence of a creator. God’s eternal power and divine nature are displayed in these things.

However, the amazing thing about the Bible’s answers to our questions is that we can go beyond looking at creation and knowing that there is a creator. We can know who The Architect is because He has revealed Himself to us not only generally in nature but specifically through His Word. God is the architect – He designed and oversees everything that exists.

In Acts 17, Paul speaks in Athens to a city full of idols. These were very intelligent people steeped in philosophy but who did not know the one true God. When Paul “preach[ed] Jesus and the resurrection” (v. 18) to them, their interest was piqued. So Paul told them about the God they previously called “unknown.” He proclaimed,

“The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in temples made by man…he himself gives to all mankind life and breath and everything. And he made from one man every nation of mankind…that they should seek God, and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him. Yet he is actually not far from each one of us,” (v. 24-27).

Paul told these men and women that God is the creator, He is our sustainer, and He is available to us as we seek Him! We can know Him personally and have an intimate, abiding relationship with Him rather than merely knowing who this creator is. This is why we are called to repent (Acts 17:30). There is a day coming when God will judge the world, and Jesus’ resurrection is the assurance of this. Through Jesus, who is also God and is also the creator of all, we can be brought near to God (Colossians 1:15-22).

It can be difficult to believe in a creator when others tell us that this is not true or when we have trouble understanding it. It is natural to have questions about the origin and meaning of life. But, as Kacey Musgraves acknowledged, we observe things all around us every day that point to an architect. The world did not “happen by chance,” and life is not “random or fate.” If we hold to what God has shared and revealed in His Word, we can rest in knowing that He is the answer to all of our questions.

So the next time you take a bite from an apple or stroll through the woods, remember that there is an architect and that God designed everything! Do you know the one true God? Have you repented and turned to Him, trusting in His Son, who came to the world He created to die so that we might have life?

Thank God that we can speak to and know Him, The Architect.
